The next afternoon, Tern finished the orientation the academy made all sworn protectors attend. It was filled with basic rules that any person with experience would know automatically; don’t draw attention to yourself or your charge, don’t pick a fight - avoid them if possible, and so on. He was a little disappointed with the armory the assistants led them into; the weapons were mediocre, but would suffice for anyone with worse or none at all. The only thing Tern could find of use was a new suit of leather armor. His current one had seen better days and he had been meaning to purchase a new suit for months.
Eating dinner with Katyde, Maleager and other new members of senior status in the academy, Tern posed a question to her. “Katyde, you told me that part of your senior year here was to go on some sort of solo journey with just your protectors. Right?”
She nodded between bites, “Yes, but I still haven’t figured out where to go. I was thinking about the western hills - or even further.”

The valley consisted of mostly farmlands, but had scattered forests separating human settlements that were of large size, and threatened by the encroachment of more farming. He wanted to see if he could make a difference and protect the forest that still existed. The ranger lived a very nomadic lifestyle, going from region to region while always on the lookout for clues to what happened to the sisters. Maleager ran into him when he first came back down from the foothills of Walkren, both had become fast friends and did a lot of traveling together. The older man helped polish Tern’s sword skills. Now Tern felt that his journeys had finally come full circle, since he had found Katyde.
“I have an idea.” Tern began, “What about a trip to Epslin? Wait,” He held up a hand to ward off a dark look, “before you say no, just listen. You need experience for the academy, perfect. We’ll go to my parents; they would love to see you. And if you wanted to keep your presence there a secret, they wouldn’t say a thing.”
Katyde stopped shaking her head as he finished speaking. When she thought about it, the plan was not all bad. If the
